We’ve recently learned a very, very important lesson. It has to do with checking trademarks. BEFORE you name and market your business. We assumed (you know what happens when you assume, right?) that mompreneurs was a general enough term that it wouldn’t be trademarked. That’s like putting a patent on the word entrepreneur, right? Well, we were wrong. Turns out the term is trademarked.
When we were initially contacted with this information, our response was that of course, we were going to fight it. The trademark was set 10 years ago, and we have little doubt that today a judge would deem it a general term and the trademark would not stand. However, once we sat down to discuss this, we realized that the very fact that mompreneurs is a general term would hurt us in the long run. We want a name that is brandable, that people will remember. We want something that will stand out when people say that they are a part of it. Therefore, we decided to avoid the potentially expensive and draining argument, and just change our name.
If you are not already a member, we would like to invite you to become a ProMom at PromotingMom.com. We love this name so much because it describes our goals in a variety of ways. You, as moms, are promoting your businesses (or business to be). Our company promotes and empowers moms to work for themselves, to add to the overall income of the household. Also, we are promoting the business of being a mom, because we are a network of moms, working together.
We look forward to sharing our experience with you at PromotingMom.com!
